Technology and application advice

Smoke candles are suitable for protection against spring frosts. The paraffin candles are installed in 6 litre metal cans which provide 10-12 hours of warm smoke.

Each crop has a critical heat temperature for its current phenological stage. This determines the organisation and implementation of frost protection measures.

Advantages of smoke candles:

-Many years of experience and tradition

-The most effective frost protection solution

-Multiple ignition - can be used several times

-Plantations can be protected at even temperatures

-Long lifetime

Application

Paraffin candles are suitable for protection against spring frosts. The paraffin candles are produced in 6 litre jerry cans. Paraffin wax can be used for 10 to 12 hours to prevent the formation of paraffin wax.for about 10 to 10 hours and the warm smoke and heat it emits.
Each fruit species has a critical temperature value for the particular phenological stage of theThe responsible person will determine the action to be taken in the light of this information. (Annex 1).

1. Planning for frost protection

A. Obtaining sufficient quantities of frost protection candles

- 350-500 per hectare are needed
- Preparation of a planting plan

B. Purchase and installation of meteorological equipment

- Installation of meteorological stations or thermometers in the field and in the control area.

C. Organisation of sufficient manpower for ignition

- 1 to 1,5 persons per hectare and 1 to 2 persons to serve them, to protect against accidents and fires and to manage the work.
- Night duty roster, alarm plan and action plan.

2. Ice protection preparations

A. Procurement and preparation of ignition equipment

- Lighters, flamethrowers, other equipment for lighting candles which comply with fire safety regulations.
- Procurement and preparation of lighter fluid and materials for lighting.
- Purchase of fire lighting tools (torches).

B. Installation of anti-freeze candles

- Installation according to plan
- Complete the installation of the candles at the latest by the beginning of the frost hazard period.
- Candles should be placed in front of the first trees in the rows and also after the last trees in the rows.
- Do NOT place candles directly next to trees, near irrigation pipes or in fire hazard areas.

C. Removal of candle caps

- Candle caps should be removed before lighting time at the beginning of the frost hazard period. At least half of the frost-protection candles must be prepared for lighting (all candles in every second row or every second candle in every row). The candle caps should be placed next to the candle, they will be needed for extinguishing!

D. Briefing, safety training and demonstration for workers involved in ice protection

3. Start of ice protection, lighting of candles

A. The supervisor alerts the frost protection workers

If the temperature drops suddenly and sharply (1 degree Celsius per hour), the alarm is triggered.(the temperature drops suddenly at sunset, a natural phenomenon).

B. Lighting candles

The values given in the table (Annex 1 or Annex 2) are indicative but may vary according to species/species. Based on practical experience: if the temperature reaches a damaging value within a short period of time, candles should be lit

- First round:

Light every second candle in every second row, plus the first and last candle of each row lit (a quarter of the total, for 450-500 candles). If the temperature in the area does not rise, or the temperature in the control area is below 10% of the control area temperature, the first and second candle of each candle will be lit.If the temperature in the control area does not rise or falls below the temperature set for the 10% control area, additional candles must be lit.

- Second round:

All unlit candles in each lit row, or every second candle in each unlit row (half of the total, for 450 to 500 candles). If the temperature in the area does not rise, or the temperature in the control area reaches -5 Celsius, all candles must be lit.

- Third round:

Lighting of all candles (if not achieved in the second round).
It is advisable to start in the area most exposed to frost and, if possible, move in the direction of the air flow. The time factor is important: the right number of candles must be lit within 1 hour of the lighting order! If half of the candles are lit (after the second round of lighting), it is advisable to prepare the unlit candles for lighting!

4. Extinguish antifreeze candles, prepare for the next protection

A. Place the candle cap back on the candle to extinguish the fire.

B. Assess the condition of the candles used

- The unused candle on the left will burn for 10-12 hours, the candle on the right, the one on the outside, will burn for 10-12 hours. This candle will not burn for more than 5-6 hours. If necessary, replace burnt-out candles
- Replace spent primer, ignition materials
- Plan the next possible ignition taking into account the condition of the candles.
