When designing the TVK-heliofol extra film range, we set ourselves the goal of combining the properties of several special purpose film types into one universal film.
The complexity of the task is that the properties of the specialised films are often in conflict. Thus, when combining them, a harmony must be found which results in balanced properties for the producer.
The properties achieved are:
1. Long life: the films are designed for a life of three to four years. Theoretically, they can be produced for a longer lifetime. However, during their lifetime, the films undergo a natural ageing process which reduces the light transmission of the films and consequently the yield under the films. It is therefore not considered advisable to use them for a longer lifetime.
2. Improving the mechanical properties of the films:
The use of high strength LLDPE raw materials can improve the strength properties, flexibility and to a lesser extent the transmittance of the film. The real question is whether the use of metallocene is intended to strengthen the films or to achieve the same strength parameters as before, with slightly improved strength parameters, and whether it is intended to reduce their wall thickness and thus their price per square metre. In the case of TVK-heliofol extra film, metallocene dosing was used to reduce the wall thickness.
In addition to metallocene, the films also contain EVA copolymer for wind resistance and improved hail resistance. However, only in an amount that does not cause a significant thermofoil effect.
Light diffuser effect: the light diffuser scatters light (improved light distribution) and this leads to a better distribution of light energy. No shade, light diffusion means that light reaches both the upper and lower parts of the plant, thus photosynthesis is more efficient. When using a light diffuser, the total light transmission is not reduced. Especially in spring and autumn, when the position of the sun is low (low angle of incidence), the light diffuser increases the light intensity compared to the open air, with a particularly large effect in east-west oriented greenhouses. Not only is the quantity of light increased with this diffuser film, but the quality of light is also improved, as diffuse transmission allows more light that is useful for plants to enter the tent. By diffusing light, the whole plant effectively participates in photosynthesis. Shading and whitewashing of the foil is not necessary, as it creates a shadow effect at high sun angles.
4. Increased chemical resistance: for all growers who use elemental sulphur to prevent fungal infestations or where there is free-flowing or free-venting thermal water within a few hundred metres of the tent, we continue to recommend our special rose films. In TVK-heliofol extra we use a stabiliser with better chemical resistance than standard foils, but without the same chemical resistance as rose foils.
