Iron is found in mineral soils in oxide or hydroxide form. It is available to plants at low pH levels. Iron is essential for chlorophyll formation and plays an important role in photosynthesis and respiration in plants. Iron deficiency inhibits plant growth.
The symptoms of iron deficiency first appear on the upper part of the plant, on the younger leaves, the vascular spaces turn yellow and the leaf veins remain green. In severe cases, the young leaves turn white and die. Iron deficiency can be caused by low iron levels, too high pH or excessive calcium, zinc and magnesium. It is worth checking that the medium is adequately oxygenated and the soil is between an optimum 18-22 degrees Celsius.
