A long-established growth and ripening regulator for tomatoes, cherries and sour cherries, for fruit set in apples and for stimulating flowering the following year.

General information:
Growth and ripening regulator in tomato, cherry, sour cherry and apple crops.

Active ingredient:
480 g/l (40 % w/w) ethephon

Formulation:
Liquid water soluble concentrate (SL)

Mode of action
The active ingredient of the preparation, ethephon, is degraded to ethylene, hydrochloric acid and phosphoric acid above pH 4 when it enters the plant. The ethylene released can cause growth retardation in cereals and accelerated ripening and intensified fruit colouration in fruits by inhibiting the synthesis of growth hormones, in particular auxins and gibberellins.

Ground application:
Preferably applied alone.
To be effective, perfect spray coverage is important, especially for cherry ripening.
Aerial application:
Not permitted.

Suggested technologies
May be used for fruit pruning in apple orchards. The product should be applied at a rate of 0,36-0,72 l/ha at a juice volume of 600-1200 l/ha from 50 % petal drop (BBCH 67) until the formation of 10-20 mm fruit set (BBCH 72). It is most effective when the lower dose of Ethrel is combined with 2-(1-naphthyl)acetamide at cherry blossom. In addition to the thinning effect, the treatment increases flowering the following year, thus reducing alternation.

It can be used to promote mechanical harvesting in cherry and sour cherry crops. Treat from the onset of varietal colouration (BBCH 85) until 1 week before harvest (BBCH 86). Application in cherry and sour cherry crops requires 0,6-0,8 litres/ha at a rate of 1200-1600 litres/ha of water. When spraying, ensure uniform distribution of the product within the crown.

May be used for accelerated ripening in sown and field tomatoes. In medium-ripe varieties, treatment should be applied at 30% ripening when 30 % of the berries show full ripening colour (BBCH 83).
harvest can be planned after two weeks. Application at a rate of 2-3 litres per hectare requires 600-800 litres of water per hectare. Two treatments are recommended for late maturing varieties. The first treatment should be applied when 10% of the berries show full ripening colour (BBCH 81), the second treatment should be applied when 50% of the berries show full ripening colour (BBCH 85). Application at a rate of 1 litre/ha requires 600-800 litres/ha of water. Higher doses may be required below 16°C or for large areas of foliage.
