It is a fast growing, small sized annual creeper belonging to the family Cucurbitaceae. Its shoots can reach up to 10cm and its leaves are deeply lobed.
Often called bitter melon, bitter gourd. It is a tropical and subtropical vine, widely cultivated for its edible fruit, one of the most bitter of all fruits. The oblong fruit is edible when young and green when cooked, but very bitter when ripe and yellow. When fully ripe, the fruit opens up and inside is a red, sweet flesh containing the seeds.
TASTE:
Seed contains fatty oil, leaf momordicin, resin acids, vitamins.
Mainly used in type 2 diabetes. Bitter melon can be eaten raw or cooked, the juice can be drunk, or it can be made into a tea or a decoction. Not recommended for children or pregnant mothers!
