WASHINGTONIA ROBUSTA - Mexican fan palm - 5 seeds/pack
Palmae
Washingtonia robusta Mexican fan palm
Mexican fan palm
Native to Southern California, Arizona.
It forms a solitary trunk that can reach heights of 18-20 m in natural conditions. Under the leaf spines, the old leaves recurve until they are completely dry or torn off by the wind, remaining on the trunk, forming a skirt. The leaves are fan-shaped, greyish green, 2m in diameter, deeply cleft in the middle.
Without the leaf bases, the stem surface is rough, greyish brown. The spines on the petiolar margins of young specimens are reddish brown in colour.
It is distinguished from Washingtonia filifera by the fact that the base of the trunk is ivory-thickened, but the rest of the trunk is only 25-30 cm in diameter.
It prefers a sunny or partly shady position and a humus-rich soil. It can also be kept in containers.
Wintering should be in a cool, sunny place.
As it develops a strong root system, it should be transplanted more often than other palms.
Minimum temperature : 10 °C.
The seed germination period is about 2 months.
