General characteristics of the Jalapeno pepper:
The jalapeno pepper variety is a medium-high growing, very hot pepper variety. It is one of the most popular pepper varieties, such as the cherry pepper.
Morphology:
The height of the plant can range from fifty to ninety centimeters, with a growing season of about two months. The flowers of the plant are white in colour. The peppers can grow up to 30 peppers on a single stem under suitable conditions. The size of the fruit varies from five to ten centimetres long and three centimetres wide.
Uses:
The fruit, which can be green or red in colour, can be picked continuously, usually turning red towards the end of the season. For drying, they are usually picked before they ripen and left to redden and ripen. The fruit can be used in a wide range of ways, but as with all vegetables, it is best eaten fresh. It can be used to flavour dishes, as its strong flavour adds an enjoyable aroma to dishes.
Environmental requirements of jalapeno peppers:
Soil requirements:
It needs a well-prepared soil with adequate nutrients and drainage, because like all peppers in general, this variety needs a lot of watering.
Water requirements:
High water demand. It is best to use drip irrigation, as it is not good for the crop if the water comes directly to it.
Temperature requirement:
The plant has a high heat requirement, so plant it in a place where it gets enough sunlight, with a temperature of between twenty and twenty-seven degrees Celsius being best. Keep an eye on the temperature, as if the weather is not warm enough the pepper seeds may not germinate and the plant may not sprout or, in the case of seedlings, the seedlings may not survive. If the temperature is too hot, above 30 degrees Celsius, the crop may be smaller.
Growing jalapeno peppers:
Sowing:
Seeding for seedling production can begin in mid-January.
Germination temperature:
Germination between 22-27°C, germination is delayed at lower temperatures.
Planting:
Can be planted in late April-early May, after late spring frosts have passed.
Harvest:
Harvestable from June to November. The fruit should be picked carefully from the stem before the fruit has turned red. The peppers that are suitable for picking are those that are already firm enough.
