Family: Bignoniaceae
Common name: Jacaranda mimosifolia, Common Jacaranda, Blue Jacaranda
A fast-growing, spectacular deciduous tree native to the drier climates of South America. Its leaves are double-stemmed, elegant medium green, turning bright yellow before the leaves fall. In late spring to early summer, the bell-shaped, pendulous flowers open in late spring and are mostly clustered in leafless, shoot-end inflorescences. Reddish-brown pods are disc-shaped.
JACARANDA
The genus Bignoniaceae comprises about 50 species of deciduous and evergreen trees and shrubs. They are native to the drier subtropical and tropical regions of Central and South America. Their leaves are simple or 1 to 2-lobed. Their funnel-shaped or bell-shaped flowers open in spring-summer and are borne in racemes at the end of shoots or in leaf-tips, and are mauve-blue, less often pink or white. They are among the most popular flowers.
CULTIVATION:
Shallow-rooted, nutrient-demanding species. They grow quickly in sunny soil with good nutrients and drainage. When young, keep in a place protected from wind and cold. Later they are more hardy. Pruning is not necessary. Water often during the growing season and less often in winter. In late winter or early spring they can be propagated by sowing seeds or by half-tree cuttings.
Germination is easy, taking 4-6 weeks.
