Strelitzia reginae is a perennial evergreen, a large, clump-growing, shrubby plant cultivated for its showy flowers. The bluish-grey leaves, 1.5 m long, are arranged in a fan-shape at the end of the stem, and between them it bears its beautiful and odd flowers on long stalks.
Strelitzia needs both partial shade and bright sun to grow vigorously. For the best specimen, get some shade during the hottest part of the day.
It will tolerate cold for short periods. They can be grown in fertile, well-drained soil in strong light, but sheltered from hot sun in summer. Leaves are damaged if temperatures are - 2°C or less, but the plant will recover later if favourable temperatures are restored. Drought tolerant, but needs to be kept moist for rapid growth. Do not stand the pot in water !
Nutrient supply is sufficient once a month.
It can be kept outdoors from spring to autumn. In winter, or when the temperature drops below 5°C, it should be moved into the conservatory or indoors !
Minimum temperature : 5 - 10 °C
Sensitive to frost. Seed germination can last from 4 weeks to 18 months.
