What is perlite and what can it be used for?

Expanded horticultural perlite is a lightweight, germination-free, neutral pH, high temperature heat treated volcanic perlite rock.
Perlite is used in horticulture worldwide as a soil loosener and in hydroponic growing systems as a soil release medium. Horticultural perlite aerates and provides optimum water and nutrient balance during crop production. Studies have shown that high quality yields can be achieved with perlite systems.

Use of perlite:

Horticultural perlite is generally used as a propagation and growing medium when mixed with soil in a ratio of 25-50-75 parts by volume - For highly water demanding crops : 3 parts perlite + 1 part topsoil - For medium water demanding crops : 1 part perlite + 1 part topsoil - For low water demanding crops : 1 part perlite + 3 parts topsoil
