Trifolium pratense
Important protein feed. On poor brown forest soils, if there is sufficient rainfall, it is the only economically viable butterfly fodder. It is often associated with grasses to improve the nutritional value of grassland. It dries better into hay in this association, and moulds quickly under repeated small rainfalls. It has the advantage of less leaf scorch than alfalfa. Its economic value is enhanced by the fact that it enriches the soil with N and improves its structure. Another justification for growing red clover seed is that, given sufficient winter and early spring rainfall, it produces a higher first crop than alfalfa seed almost throughout the country.
Its value as a pre-sowing crop is excellent. Its subsequent yield of oilseed rape is 1-2 tonnes more than that of other (non-butterfly) pre-sowings. In addition to the nearly 130 kg of N active ingredient added to the soil, it contributes to the yield of subsequent crops by improving soil structure and increasing humus reserves.
seed requirement 20-22 kg/ha
