White clover is a major grassland creator in our country. It is most important in permanent meadows and pastures, where it improves the quality of grassland crops.

Properties of white clover

It spreads its roots to fill in gaps in the lawn, protecting it from weeds and improving the nutritional value of pasture grass. It is resistant to chewing and trampling and has excellent fertility, making it a permanent feature in lawn mixtures. It has a butterfly flower. Not usually planted in pure stands, except in seed-bearing stands. White clover usually lives for 3-4 years, but its natural seed germination allows the stand to regenerate itself.

Requirements

It prefers rainier, humid areas, but thrives in drier areas. It is not picky about soils, but it is a lime-demanding plant and requires a lot of phosphorus and potassium.

Sowing white clover

Sowing time:

Sow in spring, usually with spring barley from March. It can be sown without cover crop in autumn, from the second half of August under irrigated conditions.

Sowing:

Sow 1-2, 5 cm deep to a row spacing of 12 or 24 cm.

Seed requirements:

60-180 g per 100 m2.

Seed collection:

In the year of planting, the white pea is used as fodder. From the second year onwards, the first shoot may be left as seed. Seed-bearing white clover stands flower continuously from June onwards. At maturity, we still see new white flowers. These are ignored. Start harvesting when most of the flowers have already turned brown. At this stage, the dry flowers are down, the upper part of the inflorescence axis is browned, the seeds are sulphur yellow in colour and the seeds can be easily rubbed out by hand.
