Mode of action and efficacy
As early as 1885, French salt producers produced Bordo juice by neutralising 100% soluble copper glycol with lime milk. The mixture was a kind of copper-lime complex which formed an unstable solution that had to be used as soon as possible after preparation.
Today's Hungarian Bordóilé is produced using nanotechnology, with the majority of the copper particles falling in the sub-500 nm size range, the colloidal range. In this range, the particles float in their solvent regardless of their specific gravity. When copper glycol is neutralised with lime milk, due to the different proportions added, copper salts of different basicity and poor solubility in water are produced, as well as a useful by-product, crystalline gypsum, which rapidly hardens in air and becomes almost indelible on the plant surface. The lime is also later used as a nutrient. The gypsum adheres strongly to the sprayed surfaces and then acts as a kind of copper depot, supplying a continuous oligodynamic supply of Cu2+ ions, i.e. only enough to kill pathogens, but very little copper to cause a persistent effect (for more details see.The fungicidal action of copper is due to the accumulation of Cu 2+ ions in the spore. Bordoilé has a wide spectrum of action: bacterial diseases, peronospora, needle dieback, monilia, varroasis, leaf curl.
Suggestions for use
In apple orchards, as a wash-off agent and until red bud stage, spray at least twice against scab and needle blight. After flowering, the product can be used against scab starting from waxing of the apple. (Not recommended for copper-sensitive 'Golden' varieties after red bud stage, may cause scorch). Spraying Bordo soup after harvest can reduce the extent of later scab build-up. The efficacy of the product can be increased against scab and needle dieback with Plantafos Universal immune-booster applied by drip irrigation at 10-15 l/ha at the mouse-ear or green bud stage, or at 1 l/ha after petal fall when spraying.
In grapes, spray as a preventive measure against peronospora every 7-14 days depending on shoot size of 20-25 cm, weather and infection pressure. The control of peronospora can be enhanced by the application of Plantafos Copper complex fertilizer solution and plant immune preparation at a dose of 2-3 l/ha. At flowering, the application of Mycrobor DF is recommended to improve fruit set.
In potatoes it is effective against potato blight. Application is recommended as a pre-emergence, with spraying starting before row closure and repeated every 7-10 days. The efficacy of the product against potato blight can be enhanced by the use of Plantafos Copper fertiliser solution and a plant immuniser. It has very good activity against bacterial and fungal diseases (except powdery mildew and grey rot) in vegetables (cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, green beans, green peas). It is advisable to protect every 7-14 days depending on the infection pressure. The efficacy against fungal diseases can be enhanced by the use of Plantafos Universal plant immune.
